Roman roads the road of history: the roman roads were built around 300 bc because of the expansion of the roman republic and the roman empire. they were used for armies, local goods and everyday people. the roads were made up of stones that were paved. there were over 372 roman roads covering up to 400,000 kilometers. today they have overlaid some of the roman roads with new modern roads. there are many different types of roman roads such as small local roads, highways to connect cities, major towns and military bases built by various people/communitys. the first ones to be made were called viae publicae these were main/public roads. these roads are usally repaired at a public expense payed by the community itself. viae privatae is the private towns roads or country roads. these were made by themselves who invested there own money. viae vicinales is the type of roads that villages use. these roads usally go to villages or through them the village builds it themselves. the first roman road the appian way was made in their need for a road connecting rome and brindisi. they made it in southeast italy and was made 312 bc. appius claudis caecus named the road around himself. in contruction they had some diffuclties building on the marsh and around lake albino. the appian way was used as a main road for themselves. they built the roads with various matierels and methods. they used 3 types of roads via terrena, via glareata and, via munita. for the via terrena they used a plain road of leveled earth. they built the via glareata with a earthed road and a gravled surface. the final road they used a regular built road, paved with rectangular blocks of the stone of the country. roman roads made themselves a big part of our history. they made our first roads which are still here and used today. they started something that supports our daily travel. without the roman roads they made we would probably not have the paved the roads we have today. is this article \ first second or third person
