Overcrowding of cities was one of the negative consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Moreover, there were also many negative elements, such as poor working conditions, child labor, low wages, poor living conditions, and pollution.

A common characteristic of industrial cities was the construction of poorly and inexpensively built housing lines, which were intended for working-class people. Rich factory entrepreneurs and owners established houses for their workers but also used homes as a way to make more profit.

The houses were made with the most inexpensive materials attainable and had insufficient basic features like windows and proper ventilation. Besides, most houses were built without sanitation or water. As a consequence, many people could not take a good shower and therefore suffered from very bad hygiene.

Pollution was one of the best-known elements of an industrial city. Not only were the streets and canals highly polluted by human waste and rubbish, but the air was also highly polluted. During the 18th and 19th centuries, rich businessmen set up factories and mines in England. These factories generated huge amounts of air pollution from burning coal.  

Coal was the fuel most often used in the Industrial Revolution because it was required to start newly established steam engines. Nevertheless, coal is also identified as a heavy air pollutant because when it is burned it drives small particles into the air. As a consequence, many factories in urban centers cause air quality to be dire and give industrial cities ‘smog’ that seems to float above it.

This made it possible for industries to increase their rates of production, which also came at improved qualities. The reduced time required for production meant that workers could devote their time to produce more. However, this had certain significant negative impacts. The Industrial Revolution created a sharp divide within the society, dividing people into two classes, the wage earners, represented by the laborers, and the monied wealthy class, who were the owners of the industries. The huge profits were reaped by these monied classes and were not distributed among the workers. Living conditions were severely wretched as cities grew and swelled with working-class population, without providing for adequate sanitation measures or other amenities.  

Overcrowding of cities occurred in the Industrial Revolution due to several other causes. The cities were the biggest commercial hubs and were located on the banks of rivers. Agricultural operations remained confined to the countryside, and many wished to leave the hard life of a farmer and migrate to the cities in the search of better economic opportunities. Since there was an excess of labor, many workers worked as long as 16 hours a day for a very small wage, and would then live at the workers’ quarters on the far end of the city. As more and more commercial ventures opened in the city, there was more influx of workers from the countryside to the cities, to take advantage of the economic boom. These workers did not proper homes, and there was always an outbreak of diseases.
