(1) After Hammurabi, the empire withered, and the Assyrian Sennacherib eventually overthrew the Hammurabi. Assyrian Sennacherib then gutted the city, burned it down, and dug canals through the remnants. His son Esarhaddon rebuilt the city, and after the Assyrian Empire fell, Babylon once again rose only this time under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar. (2) Babylon's walls were high and mighty. They were so big, in fact, that a chariot could race along and make a u-turn without any problems. Its gates were adorned with bulls and dragons, and its Hanging Gardens could be seen from very far in the distance. The Greeks thought of the Hanging Gardens as one of the ancient wonders of the world. Babylon's biggest feature was its ziggurat. Nebuchadnezzar told his architects to "raise the top of the tower so that it might rival heaven."
(3) If one were to drive 50 miles south of Baghdad in Iraq, one would find the spot where Babylon once stood. The Hebrew prophet Jeremiah predicted, "The wild beasts of the desert shall dwell there." That is where Babylon's final resting place lies.
(4) Babylon had two periods of greatness. The first was when it was one of the states of Mesopotamia. It had no distinction until Hammurabi ascended the throne. 42 years later, he conquered most of that area from the Persian Gulf to the borders of modern Turkey.
(5) When Nebuchadnezzar died, everything fell to pieces. On the night of October 13, 539 BC, Cyrus changed the course of the Euphrates River. He did this as the city had a religious celebration. His men crossed the dried river beds and met no resistance when toppling the city. It was the beginning of the end for Babylon.
