We are told in Act Two that Marshal Herrick is "somewhat shamefaced” upon entering the Proctor household. When chaining Elizabeth, he explains to John, “The law binds
me, John, I cannot budge." Clearly, he is a man uncomfortable with his assigned duty.
Is this the right thing to do? Is it more important to do what we're told or to follow our
own sense of right and wrong?
