In 1999, an American fisherman rescued eight-year-old Elián Gonzales from a leaky boat off the coast of Florida. His mother and several othera
refugees had died trying to escape from Cuba. During the conflict overs
whether to return the boy to his father in Cuba, this argument was
current: Elisabeth Gonzales gave her life to bring the little boy to our
shores. To force the little boy to return to Cuba, with its repressive
Communist system, can't possibly be in the child's best interests.
