3. There is a strain in a man’s heart that will sometime or other run out to excess, unless the Lord restrain it, but it is not good to venture it: It is necessary therefore, that all power that is on earth be limited, Church-power or other. If there be power given to speak great things, then look for great crimes against God, look for an obscene abuse of it. It is counted a matter of danger to the state to limit Privileges, but it is a further danger not to have them limited. They will be like a Tempest, a violent storm, if they be not limited. A prince himself cannot tell where he will confine himself, nor can the people tell. But if he has liberty to speak great things, then he will make and unmake, say and unsay, and undertake such things as are neither for his own honor, nor for the safety of the State. It is therefore fit for every man to be studious of the bounds which the Lord has set. And the same for the People, in whom fundamentally all power lies, to give as much power as God in his word gives to men. And it is appropriate that Government Officers in the Commonwealth, and so Officers in Churches, should desire to know the utmost bounds of their own power, and it is safe for both. How does paragraph 3 contribute to the development of the idea that the powers of those in authority must be limited?

A. by emphasizing the importance of understanding and applying the boundaries on freedom and liberty set by God

B. by citing incidences of violence that arise when religious or government leaders go too far in exerting power

C. by stressing that only religious leaders have the ability to interpret God’s laws as they apply to governing people

D. by describing how a combination of religious and government leadership will help maintain a balance of power

Read sentence 13 from the draft. some plants retain a great deal of their foliage through much of the spring and summer, but the leaves do not retain their green color for long. which detail would be best to add after sentence 13 to develop the topic? a. since the green color of the leaves that are bright and abundant during the warmer months will disappear by the time it is fall, it is important that the leaves are trimmed and kept freshly cut so that they will last for as long as possible. b. while the temperature outside may dictate when the fall colors of leaves appear, it is only one of many environmental factors that play a part in the changing of colors from green leaves to fall-colored leaves during the cooler months. c. if people want to enjoy the green color of leaves longer, trees should be planted where the environment is warmer and the days longer because chlorophyll in the leaves can only be manufactured and replaced with sunlight and warmth. d. the green chlorophyll normally masks the fall-colored pigments during the warmer months, but as sunlight becomes less abundant and trees become frozen, the fall colors of leaves become more visible as chlorophyll disappears.

In this excerpt from "a modest proposal" by jonathan swift, which important issue does the writer deal with using a satirical tone? some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about that vast number of poor people, who are aged, diseased, or maimed; and i have been desired to employ my thoughts what course may be taken, to ease the nation of so grievous an incumbrance. but i am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known, that they are every day dying, and rotting, by cold and famine, and filth, and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected. and as to the young labourers, they are now in almost as hopeful a condition. they cannot get work, and consequently pine away from want of nourishment, to a degree, that if at any time they are accidentally hired to common labour, they have not strength to perform it, and thus the country and themselves are happily delivered from the evils to come. a. old, sickly people cannot be hired as laborers because they don't have the physical stamina required for the job. b. old, sickly people and young laborers are useless to the nation because they cannot be productive citizens. c. the economy of the nation is burdened by the poor, the old, and the sickly who survive on charity and handouts. d. the living conditions of the poor and their lack of employment opportunities are serious concerns for the nation. reset next
