Rosie's family had come through New York's Ellis Island in 1907 with
such high hopes. They knew, of course, that the streets weren't really
paved with gold, but they looked forward to new opportunities.
Opportunities did come, but along with them came hardships. Though
the city was exciting, it was also overwhelming. Work was hard to find,
and it sometimes seemed as if no one had time to help or even notice
