Few would disagree that scientific advancements have progressively made our lives more comfortable. Today the scientific community stands at the threshold of major achievements that will contribute more to human advancement than any discovery known to date. Remarkably, scientists now have the ability to clone animals. The possibilities of such an incredible feat have multiplied since 1997 when Dolly the sheep became the first mammal ever created successfully in a laboratory. The story of how all this came about is extraordinary in itself. It took almost 300 attempts before the cloned embryo was born alive and healthy after successfully being implanted in a ewe (a female sheep). Since that time, improvements in technology have enabled scientists to clone an ever widening group of animals, including cattle, goats, horses, deer, rabbits, and mice. Because humans share genetic similarities with mice, the groundwork has already been laid for the possibility of one day cloning humans. What would have seemed farfetched and fantastic 50 years ago is now an incredible reality. As cloning technology continues to advance, so too do the possibilities of what science can offer us.
