When writing an essay, it’s important to unpack, or look closely, at the PROMPT, or the
specific task for this essay. In the PROMPT, you will see WHAT you are writing, WHY you
are writing, and WHO your intended audience is.
First, let’s start by reading the PROMPT for this essay.
To better understand all the parts of this prompt, let’s explore what the prompt is asking you to do, who
you are writing for, and what kind of writing product you are going to produce.
In your school, the Science Club is encouraging students to provide articles for its new website. For
your contribution to the website, you will write an explanatory article about improving memory.
Using more than one source, develop a theses/controlling idea to explain how to improve memory.
Once you have a thesis/controlling idea, select the most relevant information to support your
thesis/controlling idea. Then, write a multi-paragraph explanatory article explaining your
thesis/controlling idea. Clearly organize your article and elaborate on your own ideas. Develop your
ideas clearly and use your own words, except when quoting directly from the sources. Be sure to
reference the source title or number when quoting or paraphrasing details or facts from the sources.

Once you have finished revising your peer’s essay, continue to demonstrate your understanding of grammar and punctuation by writing an essay containing all of the grammatical concepts outlined above. your essay should be short, just 250 words, and it can be written on any subject. it should contain an example of parallel structure, an example of every type of phrase and clause outlined in this lesson, an example of two independent clauses connected by a semicolon, and an example of a colon. if you are struggling to come up with an idea for an essay, consider writing it about the themes present in one of the texts you have read already.

Read the excerpt from ernest hemingway’s “soldier's home.” his father was in the real estate business and always wanted the car to be at his command when he required it to take clients out into the country to show them a piece of farm property. the car always stood outside the first national bank building where his father had an office on the second floor. now, after the war, it was still the same car. nothing was changed in the town except that the young girls had grown up. how does hemingway’s description of the town as unchanged impact the readers’ perception of krebs? it emphasizes that while the town has remained the same, krebs has changed. it illustrates that krebs despises the town he grew up in because it is boring. it demonstrates that krebs views himself as similar to the other soldiers from his town. it reveals that krebs is jealous of those who were able to stay in town and avoid the war.
