there has been fourth big waves regarding feminism and gender equality throughout the history of america. the first wave began in 1848 when the first women's rights convention was held at the wesleyan chapel in seneca falls, new york. the second wave began in the early 1960s when the poem "mirror" was written. in this second movement, feminists fought against sex discrimination and extended the rights of women. the third wave began during the early 1990s when feminists wanted to question, reclaim, and redefine the ideas, words, and media that have transmitted ideas about gender, gender roles, womanhood, and beauty, among other things. the fourth wave refers to a resurgence of interest in feminism that began around 2012 and it is associated with the use of social media. the focus of this fourth wave is to get justice for women and to express opposition to sexual harassment and violence against women.
