Helios and Boreas Why do Helios and Boreas agree to have the contest? Both gods are feeling bored that day. One autumn day, Helios, the Greek god of the sun, was halfway through his daily journey, transporting the life-giving sun across the heavens in his golden chariot Suddenly Boreas, god of the frigid North Wind, blasted a stream of frosty wind across the sun god's path. Both gods enjoy playing tricks on humans. Each wants to prove that he is the mightiest of weather gods. "Take heed, Helios!" boomed Boreas.
