In paragraph 6 how does the author argue against bottom trawling on seamounts?
A. By explaining that bottom trawls in the past could not reach so far undersea
B. By suggesting the effects are unknown because unidentified species are destroyed
C. By stating that there is coral in both deep and shallow waters
D. By describing that most fish populations are already overfished
paragraph 6:
Recent studies have shown that there is more deep-water coral than shallow water coral, some thousands of years old. As most existing fish populations are overfished, pressure is placed on deep-water fish. Trawling equipment has now been modified to reach depths of 2,000 meters. Trawls are impacting sensitive marine areas like seamounts and canyons, where they could not trawl before. Seamounts—mountains in deep water—are teeming with life. Currents push nutrients up their sides and feed whole colonies of fish like orange roughy, which are slow to mature and develop. Seamounts are also hot spots of biodiversity where scientists are discovering dozens of new species. Many creatures may be destroyed before they are even identified. No one can anticipate the impact this may have on other life in the sea.
