But during this time it wasn't actually illegal to be a communist but he still started charging people with the act of subversion. This was in an attempt to overthrow or undermine a government political system. He had help from within the government. He then began prosecuting them for selling or giving American security secrets to communists. His ultimate fate was a spiral down a long path of alcoholism and died in his office.
