Amelia Earhart left for her final journey in 1937, leaving behind her husband, George Putnam, to whom she had been married to six years. In the time leading up to her departure, George helped and encouraged her. He fully supported her trip. Imagine that you are George Putnam. Write a short narrative that includes a conversation with your wife Amelia as she gets ready to depart. Make sure that you include narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, and figurative language as you take on the character of George and consider how he would feel as his wife left on this trip. Remember, he does not know that she won’t return.

I felt Amelias side of the bed dip early in the morning. As I slowly opened my eyes I could see the light from the sun try to make its way higher in the sky. The clouds were a light pink and bird sung to each other in the trees. Amelias footsteps carried to the bathroom. The sound of the sinking running was the only sound in the house yet.

I sat up and watched my wife brush her teeth. Today is the day she makes history. I am so excited for her. She worked hard and reached for her goals, now her dream is coming true. My beloved looked at me and smiled, her toothbrush hanging out of her mouth. I chuckled a bit under my breath before rolling out of bed. “Aren’t you going to eat dear?” My voice groggily asked. She gave out a mumbled no, there was still toothpaste in her mouth. “No eggs or pancakes? You always eat breakfast,” my curiosity peaked a small amount. It wasn’t like her to skip meals.

She stepped out of the bathroom and leaned against the wall. “I’m nervous George. I know I can do it, and I will. It’s just butterflies. When you do something you know you can do, but your body is too excited,” her eyes drifted over the the window and she too saw the pink clouds. “I understand my love. You’ll do amazing though. You always do,” I smiled and walked over to her. I threw my arms around her shoulders and gave her a tight hug. I kissed her forehead and grabbed her shoulders, “When you’re back, you better eat breakfast with me.” She laughed and smiled. Oh how I’ll miss her smile. I know she’ll come back to me and I’ll see it again.

I went to go make myself breakfast while my wife got dressed. She may not be hungry but I surely am. The rest of the morning went smoothly and the weather was perfect. We pulled up to the hangers and she practically jumped out of the car. This girl and flying... if she had wings you’d never be able to get her to touch the ground...

I followed after her, of course locking the car door first, and saw her talking a reporter. She was gushing about her excitement and her smile was huge as ever. The reporter thanked her and walked away. She then proceeded to check the plane, making sure everything was in working order. She was so intelligent, her vast knowledge of planes and aerodynamics was far beyond me. Her brows furred while she concentrated and her mouth was in a thin line.

She finally hopped down and approached me. “I’ll be home before you know it,” with that she pulled me in for a hug, and gently kissed me. She got back in the plane and drove it to the runway. I met up with the rest of the crowd while the mayor was giving a long speech. When Amelia pulled up the crowd burst into cheers.

She gave a few words about progress and how achieving what you want can be done with enough determination. Amelia climbed once more into the plane and buckled up. She flipped some switches and pressed buttons. The plane came roaring to life.

She waved and blew me a kiss. I caught it and grinned back at her. Then the machine went roaring down the runway, slowly getting off the ground. Amelia soar into the sky like a plane. The sky was blue as ever and the clouds white as marshmallows. My dear Amelia looked like an angel as she flew away.
