From bug bites to sprained ankles, first aid has brought humans relief and comfort since ancient times. As far back as 1099, there is evidence that knights were trained to treat those injured on the battlefield. However, it was not until the 1800s that the term “first aid” was officially used when soldiers and civilians began learning first-aid skills, which included bandaging wounds and splinting broken bones.

First Aid: Purposes and Priorities

First aid is the urgent care given to a person with a medical emergency. The three main goals of first aid are: saving lives, assisting with recovery, and preventing a condition from worsening.

Individuals with first-aid training are taught how to safely and quickly reach the scene of the accident. They also learn how to remain calm while assessing the medical needs of the injured person. Those providing assistance must first determine if the person is breathing. Then, they must scan for bleeding and monitor for shock.

Basic Steps

There are three basic steps to follow when performing first aid. First, before treating an injured person, it is important to understand the cause and extent of the wounds. Then, proceed by examining the person from head to toe while determining the best course of treatment. Last, arrange for the person to be transported to a local hospital.

Today, first-aid training is available throughout the world. Learning the basic skills could one day help you help others.
