"Ye that oppose independence now, ye know not what ye do; ye are opening a door to eternal tyranny by keeping vacant the seat of government." Paine repeats the word “ye” in order to grab the attention of colonists who may not understand the urgency of his cause. encourage readers to take up arms against colonists who agree with the king. ask the king directly to allow the colonies to be represented in Parliament. scold the colonists for their refusal to fight for an important cause.

(variety may be added by including a substitute foot from time to time such as the two anapests in line 3 above.) work in small groups giving each other feedback. reading the sonnet aloud allows you to hear the words and rhythms of the lines. generate questions that will clarify the use of words and forms. for example: was the idea of the sonnet presented in the first eight lines? how was sound used to enhance the meaning of the sonnet?
