CHARACTERS: NIKOLAI, a pessimist CHINUA, an optimist Stage Set: Graham High. Nikolai and Chinua visit their old high school after 10 years. CHINUA: Why does the balcony seem not that high? NIKOLAI: Because you are not that small anymore. CHINUA: You mean—I shot up even more. NIKOLAI: Well, it is not as thrilling to try to jump one story down. You know what I mean. CHINUA: Ah! Remember how treading on the soft, green grass was fun because we weren't allowed to? NIKOLAI: I know. We did it anyway, right? Those were the days, man! CHINUA: Yeah. High school was so much fun. Being that young and innocent was really something else. NIKOLAI: Was it really? I mean—we didn't have any money. There were all those curfews. I always liked the wrong girl. I didn't know what I wanted to be. CHINUA: Then why did I think it was so great? NIKOLAI: Because you remember it differently. I mean—it was great, but not as great as you imagine it now. CHINUA: No, man. I liked the possibilities. I liked not knowing what the rest of my life was going to be. We were dreamers then. NIKOLAI: We are survivors now. CHINUA: No, we are "thrivers" now. NIKOLAI: If you say so. CHARACTERS: NIKOLAI, a pessimist
