I often say, as a kind of proverb, that "Everybody lies."
If find that it is generally true, in my interactions with people. People often make decisions about what to say about the truth,
about reality, based on how what they say might benefit them. It's the basic reason that people lie, an effort to change reality with
words in a way that is more friendly to their own views.
You'll note that everyone in the book lies about the events of Chapter 9, about the death of Simon.
Why?
Seriously, everyone has different motives for lying about this event. Pick three of the characters, identify their lie, and explain why they
said it.
At three characters, that would be at least a sentence to establish them, and their lie. And then about a sentence at least, to explain
what that lie is for, and what it gets them. As a result, this will come out to a minimum of six sentences to be decent, probably more.
This is really important. It's a skill that we all need in life, the ability to ask why a character, or a person does things, what their
motives might be. People always ask when something will be used later in life...this skill is one that is vital.
