Whatever happens to the Pilgrims, he will interpret as God's will, rather than a consequence of their actions. For example, a disease might be interpreted as God's punishment or temptation, rather than a consequence of poor hygiene. The indigenous people's hostility might be interpreted as a proof what happens to heathens who live without God, rather than a natural behavior of people toward foreign invaders.
