"Grass" uses realism to convey a message about war. It takes a pastoral image of grass growing in a cemetery to look not at the serenity and peace of nature and setting, but, rather, at the death and devastation beneath. Rather than symbolizing fresh life, the grass conceals the dead. And once the dead are concealed, the poem suggests, they are quickly forgotten
