However, his plan was thwarted as Antigone killed herself first. Creon's new plan for Antigone's punishment includes the following: burying her alive, yet still providing her enough nutrition to keep her alive. The cause of this change of plan is because Creon knows that if he publicly stones Antigone he will lose the respect and loyalty of his subjects, and family, possibly resulting in a revolt against his reign. By sentencing her to death through starvation and exposure to uncomfortable cave temperatures and scary cave denizens, through having her walled up with a limited food supply in a remote cave, is how Theban King Creon punishes his niece and intended daughter-in-law Antigone for having traitorously disobeyed his law against non-burial of the disloyal Theban dead.
