To escape this danger, the husband and wife dug a hole, lined it with grass, and covered it over with stones and earth. They crept inside and hid from the falling stones. Eventually, the stones stopped falling, but they waited another night in their covering to be safe. When they emerged, they found the land destroyed and desolate. The woman gave birth to a son and a daughter, but she worried about not having any food. The mother gave birth to another child, but there was still no food. Three days later, all the trees began to bear fruit again. Everyone comes from the husband and wife who survived these dangers. The Supreme God was angry and dragged the world through the sea, but Tahiti broke off and was saved.

Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, traveled around the world with her mother, Demeter, who ruled over everything that grew from the earth. One day, Hades, king of the underworld, saw Persephone from a distance and immediately wanted to marry her. When she approached the river where he hid, he kidnapped her and took her to the underworld. Demeter mourned the disappearance of her daughter and neglected the crops of the world, causing them to wither and die. Fearing famine, Zeus sent Hermes to retrieve Persephone from Hades, but Hades did not want to give up his bride. He gave Persephone a pomegranate, which she ate, not realizing that eating food from the underworld would keep her there. Zeus ordered Persephone to spend part of the year on the earth with Demeter and part of the year in the underworld with Hades. So it is that the earth is alive and covered with growing plants for the half of the year Persephone spends with Demeter. When the earth is bare and lifeless, Persephone is with Hades in the underworld, and Demeter mourns her daughter’s absence.
