Red, green, and white lights tell me that I am approaching another powerboat head on. I need to give way to my starboard side, and so does the oncoming powerboat so that we do not collide!

Lights

On a boat the red light is located on the port side of the bow vessel. The green light is located on the starboard side of the bow vessel. White lights are always located in the stern but vary depending on the type of vessel. For sailboats the white light is in the middle of the stern. For powerboats it is located on the starboard side of the stern. This difference helps oncoming skippers to know which rules to follow as a sailboat under sail always has right of way.

Other situations

If only a white light is visible, it means that my boat is overtaking the other boat. I can give way either to the starboard or port side.

If only red and white lights can be seen, I am approaching the port side and must give way on my starboard side.

If only green and white lights can be seen, I am approaching the starboard side and must give way on my port side.
