Once, she and her friend had caught Miss Wenli and her then boyfriend in an unhealthy position, leading to her be sent to the countryside. Again, the narrator tells another scene when Miss Wenli was explaining about the meaning of "metaphor". She was accused of blasphemy against the great leader Chairman Mao. She was then sent to the countryside to be "disciplined".

Now, coming back to the present scenario, when the narrator had gone to meet her, she came upon two ladies arguing about an egg. If the woman hadn't mentioned the name of the other woman, the narrator wouldn't have recognized her own teacher. Such was the change in appearance of Miss Wenli. Unlike the soft, elegant lady she used to be, now she is just a bony body with "a numb stony look". The narrator left, feeling angry not at Miss Wenli but at the communist society's 'punishment' of her former teacher. She had been completely changed of her previous personality and appearance, replaced by a being that is hardly recognizable.
