“thou are not lovelier than lilacs”
by edna st. vincent millay

thou art not lovelier than lilacs,—no,
nor honeysuckle; thou art not more fair
than small white single poppies,—i can bear
thy beauty; though i bend before thee, though
from left to right, not knowing where to go,
i turn my troubled eyes, nor here nor there
find any refuge from thee, yet i swear
so has it been with mist,—with moonlight so.
like him who day by day unto his draught
of delicate poison adds him one drop more
till he may drink unharmed the death of ten,
even so, inured to beauty, who have quaffed
each hour more deeply than the hour before,
i drink—and live—what has destroyed some men.

draught – n. drink.

inured – v. to become accustomed to; hardened.

quaffed – v. to drink with enjoyment.

Take the following paragraph and write two separate paragraphs based on it. be sure to properly cite both parenthetically (don’t worry about a works cited) using this: (henderson). 1.) the first paragraph should contain a direct quote from the provided paragraph (the paragraph below). 2.) the second paragraph should contain a paraphrase of the provided information (the paragraph below). trees are in that they provide clean air. trees take in harmful gases from the air such as carbon dioxide, which is what people exhale from their lungs, and turn it into oxygen, which is what we inhale. they complete this process through photosynthesis, which requires carbon dioxide and then releases oxygen. without trees acting as nature's natural filter, the air would quickly become unbreathable to humans.

Read the rough-draft paragraph. exercising daily is one of the best ways to the body fight fatigue, illness, stress, and weight gain. whether taking a bike ride, enjoying a walk, or going for a swim, the type of activity is not as important as exercising consistently. often, people begin the new year with the resolution of exercising, but within a few months that commitment is quickly forgotten. the key is to choose something that is accessible, enjoyable, and affordable. exercising just thirty minutes a day not only strengthens the heart and lungs, but it also to boost one’s energy. another way to feel more energized is to eat a balanced diet. since no single food item can supply the body with everything it needs, it is important to eat a variety of foods. so to maintain a long, happy life, get out there and get moving, and enjoy a wide range of healthy meals. which statement best describes the mistake the writer makes in this paragraph?
