in haida history, mask making was important in retelling the story of the birth of the haida people. a common image in mask tradition and in other forms of haida art is the raven. he is known as a trickster who free humankind from a clamshell. he taught humans many lessons, including how to live a good life. the haida created masks for dancing rituals and trade offerings at potlatches. these large, ceremonial feasts were at the center of haida culture. potlatches honored three important events. the first was a marriage that united members of two different clans. the second was the giving of names to clan members. a potlatch also recognized the passing of an important figure in haida society. chiefs held these ceremonies to establish strong bonds with neighboring tribes.
