Internal conflict occurs when the character experiences emotional, mental or spiritual problems within his own mind. This commonly occurs when the character is confused about who he is, or conflicted about the values he holds. An example is Harry Potter. Throughout the book, Harry struggles to come to terms with the fact that he is "the boy who lived," and that everyone admires him and wants him to help the world, even though he feels inadequate and incapable at times. He also has to deal with issues such as the sadness of being an orphan or the fear of being in danger. These are all internal conflicts.

An external conflict is one that a character has with the outside world. This can refer to conflicts with the world itself or with other characters. For example, the main conflict Harry has is his enmity with Voldemort, who wants to kill him. He also has conflicts with Professor Snape and with his family through much of the book. These are external conflicts.

Both internal and external conflicts are important for character development. They are the way in which we make our characters more real and convince the reader to care about them. Conflicts also help move the plot along.
