Yip Harburg was an American songwriter. He was also renowned for his works with various popular artists and also in many movies. One of the major arts that he is known for is that he is the author of Over the Rainbow, from The Wizard of Oz.

Yip Harburg’s attitude about the Great Depression can be understood further from the following instances:

•A lot of people suffered during the Great Depression. He was one of the only people to profit from the Depression by utilizing his creative talents, while other people were not doing so well.

•He was also the writer of the song, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" which he wrote along with Jay Gorney.  This song was motivated by the Great Depression.

His co- writer Jay Gorney said in an interview that they wrote this song so as to make people think. It wasn’t their intention to depress them. It was more of song to force people to think about their own situation.
