1) while watson and mortimer investigate the case, holmes hatches a secret plan. it involves one of the cursed baskervilles, sir henry. the plan goes into action when sir henry heads home across the moor and is attacked by the hound. despite thick fog and their own fear, holmes and watson shoot the beast and solve the mystery.
2) holmes explains the details of the case. the curse was not real. instead, a man named mr. stapleton used the story of the curse to kill off all the baskervilles. holmes reveals that mr. stapleton was actually a baskerville who wanted the family’s money and land all to himself. he released the hound to kill the other baskervilles.
3) sherlock holmes and watson are first shown discussing a mysterious wooden cane. holmes displays his remarkable deduction skills and even predicts that the cane’s owner will meet them soon.
4) sir henry and mortimer head off on vacation to heal henry's nerves. dr. watson files the mystery as case closed.
5) the story picks up speed when a man named dr. mortimer tells holmes and watson that his friends, the rich baskervilles, have been cursed since 1742. the curse involves a huge black hound that has haunted the family for generations. he fears that it was this hound that killed sir charles baskerville, the most recent person to live in baskerville hall. sherlock sends watson with mortimer to investigate the case.
