A heroic quatrain, also called a heroic stanza, is a group of four lines that follows iambic pentameter that alternately rhymes. Iambic pentameter is how a line in poetry is built in which it has five beats with one short syllable followed by a long syllable to create a rhythm. These short and long syllables alternate in an ABAB fashion. William Shakespeare and John Dryden are two famous authors who used heroic quatrain in their literature. In simple terms, the heroic quatrain style unconsciously provides a rhythm for the reader to read a poem.
