The figurative language used in the passage is metaphor which is used in the lines- She looked down at her legs, tall trees shaking in the wind. There are various types of figurative languages such as simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc.

The use of figurative language can be understood further below:

•A metaphor, in the simplest terms, is a comparison between two objects or scenarios excluding the use of the word “as” or “like”.

•In the passage, her legs are being compared to trees. It doesn’t use the word ‘like’ but they are blatantly calling her legs trees.

•The meaning of the sentence would be that her legs were shaking as she was about to start her race. Her legs looked as though they were trees that were shaking in the wind.

•It helps us understand that she was really nervous about the race.

It also makes use of rhetorical question which means a question not expecting an answer, which is the last line of the passage above.
