listening to radio dj bobby king, who is speculated to be a reference to bob dylan according to “from connie's tambourine man: a new reading of arnold friend”. bob dylan was a folk singer, writer, and an overall pop icon, who heal the country during the vietnam war, with his powerful music. “according to his biographer, dylan was a “rock-and-roll’. it is no wonder then that arnold speaks with “according to his biographer, dylan was a ‘rock-and-roll’. it is no wonder then that arnold speaks with ‘the voice of the man on the radio’, the disc jockey whose name, bobby king, is a reference to ‘bobby’ dylan, the ‘king’ of rock-and roll.” (tierce and crafton 531). bob dylan's song, “it's all over now baby blue” influenced oates while “where are you going where are you now”, and she even went as far to dedicate the haunting story to him. some may question why joyce carol oates used bob dylan, a respected singer and songwriter who spread messages of anti-war through his songs, as an influence for her story that was based on the true killings of serial killer charles schmid. oates was trying to show the audience that anyone in pop culture can have negative influence on naive teenagers like connie, even the peacemaker bob dylan.
