"If I Forget Thee, O Earth" is a story written by Arthur C. Clarke that revolves around the father-son duo who lives far from earth, in a colony where the only existence of humanity can be found now.

Explanation:

Arthur C. Clarke's science fictional story "If I Forget Thee, O Earth" tells the story of the aftermath of earth's destruction from an atomic nuclear war. Now covered with high levels of radiation making it unsuitable for habitation, the protagonist Marvin and his father are among the very few humans that live in "The Colony" way from earth and the only surviving humanity in the whole world.

The story tells of Marvin's father telling him about the destruction of earth and how they are just left with only a few to keep humanity alive. Marvin also knows that he is not the first explorer to have to learn and know about earth's situation, and how it is now contaminated. His father told him that the ultimate goal of the colony is to try to reclaim earth and make it a settlement for humanity once again. And that is exactly what Marvin would try to achieve. The act of his father taking him to see the earth from a safe distance provides him the chance to have a memory that he will pass on to his future generations. He may not be able to get back to earth but he will make sure to tell his future generations about earth and how they should reclaim it, making it a safe place and haven for humanity once again.
