1. Although Zeus was the king of the gods, his temple was plain.
2. Because the temple was relatively simple, the Greeks decided to build a magnificent statue in honor of the god.
3. When the statue was finished, it stood some 40 feet tall.
4. The statue seemed even more imposing because it reached nearly to the lofty ceiling of the temple.
5. Although copies of the statue were made, none survive.
6. Images on coins, however, remain so that we have some idea of what the statue looked like.
7. The statue survived until a fire destroyed it in AD 462.
