Pele's Surprise 1 Of all the guppies, Pele had always been Beth's favorite. She'd noticed
her right away because she stood out. The other eight guppies were all
yellowish-orange, but Pele was yellowish-green. Beth had been
reading about Hawaiian mythology. She named the fish after the
goddess of fire, lightning, and volcanoes.
2 Beth knew something was wrong with Pele. She'd been watching her
carefully for weeks. All the other guppies looked fine, the same as
always. Beth was sure, though, that Pele was injured or sick. She
dragged her mother to the fish tank.
3 "See, Mom?" she pointed. "Pele has funny little bumps, or something,
near her tail. I think she's sick."
4 Beth's Mom leaned close to the glass and looked carefully at Pele. She
looked at some of the other guppies, then back at Pele. She started to
chuckle. "Beth," she said. "I don't think Pele is sick at all."
5 "Well, then, what's wrong with my fish?" Beth asked, worried.
6 "What's 'wrong' is that she isn't a fish at all. She's a frog! At least she
will be." Mom explained to Beth. "I think Pele's a tadpole! We better
get her out of that tank."
What does Beth learn from the story?
