A group of two or more words that function as one grammatical unit but lack a subject and a verb is called a phrase. Noun phrases have two main parts: a noun,
called the head noun, and modifiers that tell which one or what kind. These
modifiers can appear before the noun, after the noun, or in both places.
A. DIRECTIONS: Underline each noun phrase in these examples from "The Four
Freedoms." Some sentences will have more than one noun phrase. If there is a noun
phrase within a noun phrase, make the shorter one bold.
