((Again, only if you need them. If you know about the book already, then, go ahead.))

Armed with invisible ink, a cipher system, and a passion to end the war and preserve the Union, Elizabeth Van Lew became Butler's eyes and ears in the Confederate capital city. Truth be told, however, she became much more than that. She became a spymaster, the person responsible for running a network of agents, couriers, and safe houses that was very active during the war.

—The Dark Game,
Paul Janeczko

The success of the Information Age depends on the ability to protect information as it flows around the world, and this relies on the power of cryptography. Encryption can be seen as providing the locks and keys of the Information Age. For two thousand years encryption has been of importance only to governments and the military, but today it also has a role to play in facilitating business, and tomorrow ordinary people will rely on cryptography in order to protect their privacy.

—The Code Book,
Simon Singh

Arthur Zimmermann had no idea that "Blinker" Hall had read his secret message. But now that Hall had read it, what could he do with this information? On one hand, he believed that President Wilson, faced with the information in the telegram, would declare war on Germany. On the other hand, to share the telegram with Wilson would surely alert Berlin that the British had been reading their secret messages. As he walked back to his office, Hall considered ways that he could share the intelligence in the Zimmermann telegram and establish its authenticity without letting Berlin know that Room 40 had intercepted and read hundreds of their secret messages.

Paul Janeczko

Codebreakers continue to use old-fashioned techniques like traffic analysis; if codebreakers cannot fathom the contents of a message, at least they might be able to find out who is sending it, and to whom it is being sent, which in itself can be telling. A more recent development is the so-called tempest attack, which aims to detect the electromagnetic signals emitted by the electronics in a computer's display unit. If Eve parks a van outside Alice's house, she can use sensitive tempest equipment to identify each individual keystroke that Alice makes on her computer. This would allow Eve to intercept the message as it is typed into the computer before it is encrypted.

Simon Singh

Although traffic analysis, tempest attacks, viruses and Trojan horses are all useful techniques for gathering information, cryptanalysts realize that their real goal is to find a way of cracking the RSA cipher, the cornerstone of modern encryption. The RSA cipher is used to protect the most important military, diplomatic, commercial and criminal communications – exactly the messages that intelligence gathering organizations want to decipher.

Simon Singh

HERE'S THE THESIS:
"The Dark Game by Paul Janeczko and The Code Book by Simon Singh both explain and examine aspects and facts of the history of the wars and spies throughout time. However, the organization, tone, and style are pretty different through the two texts. This creates a contrast between the two."
