O A. Controlling nonnative plant species is up to government
agencies
Landscape Invaders!
A weed can be defined as a plant growing out of place. Weeds are
basically nonnative plant species. Nonnative species that become deep-
rooted, fast-spreading, and detrimental are referred to as noxious weeds.
To home gardeners, weeds are little more than extra work and a test of
patience and persistence when ridding them from prized flower beds.
Weeds are an entirely different matter for farmers, ranchers, wildlife
managers, and conservationists. It is the scale of landscape affected by
weeds that makes the difference. When weeds spread across thousands of
acres of land, the impact can be devastating. Controlling such unchecked
growth is a huge task
OB. Unwanted plant species will not be eradicated from
American landscapes
C. Efforts must be made to retum nonnative plant species to
their original homes
2
D. The infestation of weeds does not impact the American
landscape very much
Weeds first arrived in the United States in the form of seeds.
Colonists on the East Coast and Spanish settlers in the Southwest brought
seeds for crops and grain for livestock. The ships that transported the
settlers were also a source of seeds brought to America. Dirt was often
used as ballast to keep the ship stable during the sea voyage. Once a ship
reached its destination it dumped the ballast. Seeds contained in the dirt
were given the opportunity to grow in the New World
3
The colonists and the Spanish settlers planted the seeds of crops they
had depended upon in their home countries. Mixed in with the cultivated
seeds of the crops were the weed seeds of "wild" species of plants.

Read this passage from “the fall of the house of usher.” which element of gothic literature is not obvious in this passage? as if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell, the huge antique panels to which the speaker pointed threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws. it was the work of the rushing gust—but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady madeline of usher. there was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. for a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold—then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. bleak or remote settings supernatural or otherworldly elements macabre or violent incidents strong language full of dangerous meaning
