Students will establish an approach to identifying and explaining the argument in a poem. By analyzing
text for the poet's use of poetic devices, students will be able to identify each device in the poem and
explain its significance to the poet's overall message or argument.
To demonstrate their understanding of this relationship between poetic devices and meaning,
students will read multiple poems, identify the use of poetic devices in each and end the unit by
writing an essay that identifies the meaning of a chosen poem by analyzing poetic devices.
