At birth a giraffe calf is about six feet tall (top of head) and weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. Its proportions are less exaggerated than those of an adult giraffe. Its upright, S-shaped neck is shorter. The bristly mane runs down onto its back and sometimes has an extension on the rump. Two horn cartilages, flat-lying to facilitate* the calf’s birth, can be felt under the skin on the head. Each is topped by a tuft of black hair. During the first days of the calf’s life the horns actually move about on the skull, to which they are attached only by connective tissue. Very soon the horns become stiff, as bone begins to replace cartilage. The calf’s short hair has a woolly texture. On each flank a spiral hair tract or whorl is conspicuous.
