My mother was a tall, beautiful woman who was well educated and could speak four languages. She and my father had a little grocer's shop in the village where we lived in
Poland. Behind the shop was a two-room apartment where we lived. My mother had a
wagon in which she used to drive about the village, selling her groceries, and sometimes
she worked in the fields with my father. We were happy while my father was alive, although
we had to work very hard. By the time I was six years of age, I was able to wash dishes and
scrub floors, and by the time I was eight, / worked in the shop while my mother was away
driving her wagon or working in the fields with my father. She was strong and could work
like a man
When / was ten years of age, my father died. He was a good man and a steady worker,
and we never knew what it was be hungry while he lived, but his death was the basis of
all our troubles.
Mother and I struggled until I was nearly 13 years of age, and we eventually fell behind
in the rent. Mother thought we should leave Poland and go across the sea to America
because she heard it was much easier to earn money there. She wrote to Aunt Fanny, who
lived in New York, and told her how hard it was to live in Poland. Aunt Fanny advised her
to move to New York and bring me. She went around among our relatives in New York and
took up a collection for our passage.

Which excerpt from “the girl who silenced the world for five minutes” supports suzuki’s argument that she is “losing [her] future”? coming here today, i have no hidden agenda. losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock market. and now we hear about animals and plants going extinct every day – vanishing forever. i'm only a child, yet i know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal.
