The narrator has ideas about Scrooge and his plot. He also puts himself and the reader at the center of the action, implying that he is standing in the spirit of the (viewer's) elbow. Dickens' vocabulary is extremely specific, providing a vibrant sense of location and environment. The narrator approaches the reader in a playful manner as he explores the significance of 'dead as a doornail.' This kind of narrative allows Dickens to draw explicitly on the actions and behavior of the characters and to make jokes for his viewers.
