What if we let children fully move their bodies during recess time, let them get dirty, and even test out new theories? What would recess look like then?

The closest I found to doing just that was the Swanson School in Auckland, New Zealand. I had heard of its nonconventional, yet successful approach to recess through social media and was instantly intrigued.

As part of a new project, some schools are now sending students outside to play four times a day. Early results show an increase in student focus and a decrease in bullying. The program seems to show that it is important to get children playing and moving.

One result of allowing kids more time for recess, [Principal McLain] said, has been increased instructional time "because the kids come back in and settle down and get to work because they know they will receive another recess before long.” He also said teachers referred kids to the office for disciplinary action less often as a result of the program and found that "kids are solving their own problems much more independently.”
