Leaders included W. E.B. Du Bois, who helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Marcus Garvey started the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). These men encouraged African Americans to come together as communities and to be proud of their race and heritage.

W. E.B. Du Bois published these words in 1920, a few decades before the Civil Rights Movement started: "I believe in Liberty for all men, the space to stretch their arms and their souls: the right to breathe and the right to vote, the freedom to choose their friends, enjoy the sunshine and ride on the railroads, uncursed by color."​
