The U. S. government has made efforts to keep blood diamonds out of the country. In 2003, the Clean Diamond Trade Act was enacted. Under this act, the source of all diamonds entering the U. S. must be checked. Unfortunately, the process for checking diamonds entering the country is not foolproof and has not been entirely effective.
Because of this uncertainty, many people argue that diamonds should not be bought. However, there are ways for people to avoid buying blood diamonds. Buy diamonds that have been mined in countries not currently involved in civil war. Also, vintage diamonds from as late as the mid-twentieth century will not be blood diamonds. Some retailers are able to provide proof that their diamonds were mined under safe conditions. Purchasing factory-made diamonds is a great way to avoid the blood diamond controversy all together.
