With violent gusts and squalls the storm broke. Great rushes, huge bulky rushes, of
wind struck the building in heavy, repeated thuds., shaking it all over and over and
carrying on. Families were huddles together on the floor. People sang, sitting on
benches, desks, anywhere there was room. Some people knelt in loud prayer. Among
the refugees' noises a goal bleated, a hen fluttered, a dog whined.
Why is this imagery important to the setting at the beginning of the story?
