ERNESTO I had a big knot in the pit of my stomach as I approached Finn's desk. I could feel his gaze on me with every step I took down the row of desks.
How will I ever explain to him that, although he had given the class two weeks to write the poetry analysis essay, I still couldn't turn it in? I felt
nervous. The pounding of my heart matched my footsteps in a cadence I was sure the whole class could hear.
"Excuse me, Mr. Finn, I have something I need to talk to you about," I sputtered in almost a whisper. "I finished my poetry analysis, but I can't turn
it in today." I explained to Mr. Finn the long story about how I misplaced my textbook and research notes when my family moved from one
apartment to another. I told him I was sure I would find it in the next few days as we finish unpacking the moving boxes.
"Well, Martin, that certainly is a unique story. Let's see what we can work out," he said with a smile.
