Read paragraphs and answer the question thx for. Brainlist and 25 points It is high time that whaling—the process of hunting and killing whales—should pass into history along with other obsolete customs, like riding horses into battle. The use of cavalry horses involved the brutal treatment of innocent living creatures who suffered terribly until the practice was phased out with the rise of new military technology. There are many reasons to abandon whaling.

There is no humane way to kill a whale; whether shot or harpooned, the animal dies slowly and painfully. At the height of the whaling industry, no part of the catch was wasted. Whalebone was the perfect material for umbrella ribs, corset stays, and a variety of tools. Whale oil burned cleanly in lamps, with no acrid odor, and the meat of one whale could feed an entire village for months. But today we have substitutes for all of these things: umbrella ribs, for instance, are made of wood, plastic, or metal; lamps are lit by electricity, and most areas of the world have countless other sources of food. Therefore, no one can reasonably argue that despite its brutality, whaling is necessary because whale products are essential.

Second, whaling is already illegal. In 1946, world leaders created the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to monitor the hunting of whales. When studies showed that many of the world’s whale populations had fallen to alarming lows, the IWC banned commercial whaling altogether—a ban that all member nations must obey.

When some nations argued for cultural and scientific exemptions to the moratorium on whaling, the IWC agreed. Any government can apply for an IWC permit for aboriginal subsistence whaling. With such a permit, a native population with a longstanding cultural and nutritional dependence on whaling may continue the practice, within limits that protect the whale population as a whole. Similarly, countries can request exemption from the ban for the purpose of scientific research. In both cases, the IWC limits the number of whales that can be killed within a given period of time. According to IWC studies, whale populations naturally grow by 4% to 10% per year; cultural and scientific whaling must stay well below these numbers so that the whales’ birth rate will always outpace the losses from whaling.

Whales face many dangers besides being the deliberate targets of hunters. Over the course of a year, many whales die in collisions with large ships. More are trapped in nets spread for fish; they are often fatally injured as they try to fight free of the nets. Air and water pollution, climate change, and marine debris, all of which have greatly increased over the last century, threaten whales’ lives. Human beings endangered the world’s whale species; it’s up to us now to protect them from extinction.
