"Rules of the game" is a short story that tells the story of a Chinese family living in San Francisco. Waverly, the main character, who is also the speaker, gets involved with chess little by little. The origin of the relationship with the game starts at a Christmas party in San Francisco's China Town, and that could be understood as one of the American rules, noted when the speaker mentions that the youngest kids did not know that Santa Claus is not Chinese. Another important rule the family addopts is to spend time with strangers. At the beginning of Waverly's participation in tournaments, she was afraid her mother would not let her participate because she would compete with unknown people. Finally, her mother accepts it to the point she likes to tell stranger people that Waverly is her daughter. Perhaps the biggest rule addopted by Waverly's family is to accept she won't be always at home, in charge of the chores or helping her mother. Her brother, Vincent, mentions something about it, but the mother points out that Waverly's roles has changed because of the tournaments, making her a public figure and a young chess promise.
