Jackie is writing about how Esperanza changes in Esperanza Rising. He reads this passage. Puzzled, Isabel looked at Esperanza. "Don't you know how to wash clothes?"

"Well, Hortensia took everything out to the laundry quarters. And the servants, they always . . . " She looked at Isabel and shook her head no.
